    Zanzibar

We took a 2.5 hour ferry to Zanzibar for a nice 4 day break from the tents and the dust. As soon as we were off the boat and managed to get through immigration, we set off on a spice tour. Lunch was the first stop where we had yummy spicy curries. Next we head off to the ‘farm’ where they showed us the spice plants and local fruits.

    Tanzania

Our first taste of Tanzania was a drive to Lake Victoria. Along the way, we were surprised at how different a country that is right next door to Kenya could be. You literally cross the border and the houses are different, the people are different and even the roads are different! The houses are Masaai houses, we later found out.

    Kenya

We landed in Nairobi and thankfully we’d already gone through the visa saga, so we got through reasonably quickly, got our bags, then waited about 30 minutes to buy some more US dollars. No transfer waiting for us (which we’d organised), so we headed to where the tour group told us to go for a taxi – glad we had a backup plan! Traffic was terrible! But our taxi guy found a less congested way and got us there in one piece. Obama was starting his first speech after his arrival in Ghana.

    In love with Rwanda

Wow – what a start to our trip. People thought we were crazy to go to Rwanda. But this place is absolutely amazing and let me just say that the rest of the world need take a page out of the Rwandan book. 15 years after the horrific genocide, this country has picked itself up proudly, moved on and got themselves a kick arse attitude.
